In my sermon last Sunday, I included a couple of exercises that got us out of our comfort zones. Hopefully, you were able to meet some new people in the congregation through those activities. I also hope that you were encouraged to put aside doubts about your abilities and think about ways that you could serve in the church. Following the service, I asked attendees to pick up a copy of Thom Rainer’s book, “I Will! Nine Traits of the Outwardly Focused Christian.” Rainer, a church growth specialist, challenges Christians to be outwardly focused in their mission. This book is intended to spark conversations that will help Christians be at their best in reaching their communities for Christ. It is my hope that similar conversations will take place in our Sunday school classes and small groups. If you missed last Sunday, make sure to get a book from me. I still have several more copies available. Please read and discuss the book with other church members. If you are not currently a member of a Sunday school class or small group in the church, I will be happy to help you find one.
Our Lifetree Small Group is currently exploring the beliefs of other faiths. This week’s program, titled “Mormons: Christian? Cult? What do they really believe?” includes filmed interviews with people who have left the Mormon church and also those who have joined it. A filmed interview with a theology professor will also be shown and discussed. “We’ll discuss what Mormons believe and whether or not the Mormon church is Christian,” said Lifetree representative Craig Cable. “Some accuse the Mormon church of being a cult. We’ll explore whether that’s a fair depiction.” This is the second of four episodes in the Lifetree Small Group series “Other Faiths: What Christians Really Need to Know.” The group meets this Thursday, April 14th at 7:00 p.m. in room 130. All are welcome!
